celebrate | easter surprises

Earlier this week, my little helper assisted me in sending out some Easter surprises to family members.  Did you know you can send Easter eggs through the mail?  Just find some large eggs, fill, tape the seam to secure for shipping, and take em' to the post office.  I found both the large and the REALLY large eggs at our local dollar store.

See, it really does work! A safely arrived egg (photo credits go to my mother-in-law).

In the past I have mailed blown up beach balls and a message in a (empty) plastic water bottle.  From what I hear, you can also mail bananas, but I've never tried that one.

Do you know of any other unusual items you can send through the mail?

baby | 18 weeks

Still truckin' along.  Unfortunately, my reprieve from morning sickness turned out to be temporary.  However, even though the morning sickness is back, it's definitely not as bad as it was before!  I've been having an easier time keeping food down this round, especially if I do most of my eating before 5pm.  Why 5pm?  I have no clue, it just seems to be the cutoff point lately.  Still, no complaints here since at least I can eat!  My goal is to get back up to my pre-pregnancy weight before our big halfway-through (I can hardly believe it!) ultrasound in a week.  Since our ultrasound is on Good Friday, I have the day off work, and Isaac doesn't have class, so we get to go out and celebrate with a lunch date afterwards.

Besides the throwing up, I've been feeling pretty great lately!  I haven't had any problems sleeping (no surprise to those who know me well), and with the warmer weather I've been able to get out and walk nearly everyday that it hasn't rained.  I haven't really had any cravings, but lately I have been eating a lot of grapefruit, peanut butter, apples, carrots, and cheese.

health & beauty | the oil cleansing method

I'll be the first to admit that the oil cleansing method sounded totally crazy when I first read about it. Purposely putting oil on your face is almost looney bin worthy, right?  Turns out it's not.  Even though it's just a simple mixture of olive oil and castor oil, it works as well as or better than any expensive facial cleanser I've ever used.  Below I've copied over part of an article about oil cleansing, but please go read the full article from Simple Mom.  She does a much better job explaining this method than I ever could.

The Oil-Cleansing Method (OCM)
"Alright, it might sound a little odd to clean your face with an oil, especially if you have oily skin. But contrary to popular belief, oil does not cause oily skin or acne. That culprit is usually a combination of hormones, trapped bacteria, and dirt.
Like your hair, the sebum that the skin secretes is actually good for your skin — it’s there to protect it from the outside environment, and to keep harmful things from seeping in. Since water doesn’t break up oil, most commercial cleansers are marketed with the “oil free” stamp of approval, making them easy to splash off.
When skin’s natural oils are removed, the body’s reaction is to compensate by producing more oil, much like shampoo does with our hair. Or if your skin is dry, it’s because all the oil has been stripped away, and your body doesn’t compensate by replenishing it (that was my case).
Here’s a direct quote from acne.org:
Oil dissolves oil. One of the most basic principals of chemistry is that “like dissolves like.” The best way to desolve a non-polar solvent like sebum/oil, is by using another non-polar solvent similar in composition: other oils. By using the right oils, you can cleanse your pores of dirt and bacteria naturally, gently and effectively, while replacing the dirty oil with beneficial ones extracted from natural botanicals, vegetables and fruit that heal, protect and nourish your skin. When done properly and consistently, the OCM can clear the skin from issues like oily skin, dry skin, sensitive skin, blackheads, whiteheads and other problems caused by mild to moderate acne–while leaving your skin healthy, balanced and properly moisturized.”
So in essence, good-quality oil is the perfect substance for cleaning sensitive skin, such as on our face, because it helps gently remove the dirty oil and replaces it with good, nourishing, healing oil."

So there you have it, the how and why oil cleansing works.  I have really dry skin most of the time and yet still find myself dealing with consistent acne.  The topical gel that I was using to help control my acne isn't approved for use during pregnancy, so I stopped using it when we found out we were expecting.  The pregnancy-safe facial cleanser I was using was seriously drying out my skin and didn't seem to be doing a thing about the acne.  I honestly figured that trying the OCM couldn't be much worse, so what did I have to lose?  I've been using the OCM for a little over two weeks now, and so far I am very pleased with the results. I haven't had a single new breakout since starting the OCM, and all my existing acne has cleared up considerably.  In addition, I no longer have to use any moisturizer at night, and I only need a little in the morning.

As far as costs go, I bought my castor oil at the pharmacy for $1.42, and I expect the bottle to last me 1 year. I just use the olive oil from my kitchen, so I'm a little fuzzy on the actual cost of that half of the cleanser. However, I can give you my best guess.  From my rough calculations, I figure that there are 34 tablespoons in my 17 ounce bottle of olive oil (approximately $10), and I used approximately 1 tablespoon to make enough cleanser to last me more than two weeks. One bottle should last me nearly a year and a half.  So if I had to guess, I'd say my total cost for a years worth of cleanser is right around $8.50 or $0.71/month.

If you want to try it for yourself, please read the whole article from Simple Mom.  She goes through the entire process: mixing and storing your oil, applying it, and steaming your face/removing the oil.

baby | custom burp cloths

I found the cutest tutorial for baby burp cloths here.  It looked like a fun little project, and Joann Fabrics was conveniently having a 25% off your entire purchase sale (including sale fabrics!!!) this weekend.  I got 10 inches each of 2 different patterns along with 10 inches of chenille (I also used a 40% off coupon on this fabric, it's on the pricier side) and 10 inches of flannel.  The tutorial calls for chenille, but I wanted to give the flannel a try too because it was on sale and super soft.  I spent $6 total on fabric and made 6 burp cloths with a little fabric left over.  The cheapest burp cloths they have on the Babies 'R' Us website run $5.99 for 3 (and it goes up a lot from there) -- twice the cost of my homemade ones.

I was so happy with how these turned out that I went back to Joann Fabrics again today to pick up a little more fabric while the sale was still going on.  These are a great size, but I would like to make another set with longer dimensions, maybe around 9x18, just to see if the extra length is helpful (the tutorial is for burp cloths that are 9x14).

Two things that I did in addition to the tutorial instructions:
1) After stitching around the edge of the fabric while the right sides are together, snip off the corners a little above the stitching.  This creates really smooth, nicely shaped corners when you turn the fabric right side out.
via
2) I like to topstitch around the edge once I've turned the burp cloth right side out to give it a more finished, professional look.

These would also make a great gift and can be customized to suit the style and personality of the receiver!

style | maternity swimwear

So if you're already laughing because I used "style" and "maternity swimwear" in the same title, I get it. I laughed too.  While I have happily given up bikinis (interesting side note, yes they do make maternity bikinis but there is no amount of money someone could pay me to wear one), there are several really cute options for maternity tankinis, if you know where to look.   And trust me, I've looked just about everywhere.  I know people differ on this, but I infinitely prefer tankinis over one-pieces (maternity or not) -- but seriously, who wants to have to go pee all the time while wearing a one-piece?

PEZ D'OR Women's Maternity Capri Classic Marine Tankini $118

I love the nautical look of this suit, but the $118 price tag seemed a little steep for a suit I can only wear when I'm prego.  However, if you're willing to shell out the $$, the sweetheart neckline on this suit is lovely and nicely conservative.

Ingrid & Isabel Tankini Top (bottom sold separately) $62

I love the colors this tankini top comes in, and this suit definitely looks like something I would have worn before I got pregnant.  However, my boobs have gone from a B cup to a DD and I think this swimsuit would probably not look how I would want it to look.  Also, I hate the bottoms they have in the picture, but since you order the bottoms separately you can get whatever style you like.

A Pea in the Pod: Side Ruched Maternity Tankini Swimsuit $79.50

Simple, cute, nice shaping around the chest area without being super low-cut.  A good overall suit.

The pink color is fine, but I love the black for this top.  You can't beat the price, plus Old Navy is always running sales and discounts (especially if you are signed up for their email list).  I ordered this one a few weeks back for $15 just to try it, and it fits really well.  The side ruching is nice because it fits and looks good now at 17 weeks and will continue to stretch and fit (I hope) into my third trimester.  Although I don't really expect it to fit all the way to the end, that would be asking a lot.

Mermaid Maternity Fold Over Panel Swim Skirt with Attached Boy Short $47.00

I know it doesn't look like much in the picture, but this is my all time favorite piece of maternity swimwear.  I finally ordered it last week because it's been in the 80's here in Fort Wayne, and I think we'll be getting the blow up pool out for Ruby (the 2 year old I nanny for) very soon.  One thing that I really wanted in a maternity swimsuit was a not-too-short, not-too-long, well fitting swim skirt (goldilocks syndrome anyone?).  Since I work as a nanny, I spend most of the Summer outdoors at splash pads, in the sprinkler, etc.  Plus Isaac and I spend a lot of time at the beach between vacations with both of our families.  So I really wanted a swimsuit that would work both in and out of the water.  This swim skirt is absolutely perfect.  It's just long enough to be comfortable when we're at the beach playing bocce ball, but it's still short enough that it doesn't look fuddy-duddy or weigh you down when it gets wet.  I also like that it comes in black because I can then pair it with a black tankini top from just about anywhere -- no color matching required.

*Quick note: Old Navy also offers a black maternity swim skirt for the fantastic price of $19.94, but I didn't like the way that it fit nearly as much as the Mermaid Maternity.

I ended up deciding on the above swim skirt in black along with the Old Navy tankini top, also in black.  My total for the two came out to $62 (well, $67.95 including shipping for the swim skirt, Old Navy had free shipping).  This is one of the most expensive suits I've ever bought, but I think it'll be worth it in the end, considering how much time I'll spend in it this Summer.  Plus, it's hard to put a price tag on a suit that makes you feel comfortable and attractive ESPECIALLY when you're pregnant.

While I wouldn't normally post pictures of myself in a swimsuit, I know I always prefer to see suits on real people instead of models.  If you're currently looking for a good maternity swimsuit, hopefully this gives you a better idea of what these two pieces actually look like.  I know it's hard to see any details in a picture of a black suit, but the suit really does look nice in person.  If you look closely you can see the lovely side ruching in the second picture, it's definitely my favorite part of the top.

baby | 16 weeks

Well folks, it's true, we're going to be parents right around the end of August! I'm 16 weeks along and baby J is growing like crazy! It's hard to believe that in just 4 weeks we'll already be halfway to meeting our sweet little baby.

The first 15 weeks were pretty rough morning sickness wise (thus my total lack of blogging the past several months).  I happen to be one of the lucky few who throw up nearly everything during the first trimester. Thankfully my doctor was able to prescribe a medication that helped with the nausea when I wasn't eating but unfortunately did little to actually keep food in my belly.  When I went in for my 12 week appointment, the doctor said the baby was growing really well but she was concerned because I had been losing weight consistently since about 6 weeks.  At that point my doctor said that I needed to start keeping food down on my own and gaining at least a lb/week or I would need to supplement with a home IV service.  For a couple weeks I was able to hold my weight steady but wasn't able to really gain anything. Thankfully when I got into my 15th week the throwing up mostly stopped and the nausea has also been getting better.  I haven't gotten back up to my pre-pregnancy weight yet (which is hard to believe some mornings when my belly seems bigger than when I went to bed and none of my regular clothes fit right) but everyone assures me that will be taken care of later in the second trimester when you feel like you could eat anything and everything in sight. :)

Isaac has really been a trooper.  He's been taking great care of me and because I haven't really been able to cook much since becoming pregnant, he's also been cooking for himself (he's perfected mac and cheese with hotdogs).  Thankfully I haven't had to miss a single day of work, but I was getting home and going straight to bed for awhile so he has also been doing a lot of extra work around the house -- what a guy!

I'm finally starting to feel more like myself again and am enjoying having a little more energy and the ability to stay up past 7pm.  I'm even back to cooking dinner (albeit meat free -- this pregnancy has made me a begrudging vegetarian) pretty regularly!  And now that I'm feeling better, I'll do my best to update regularly and post pictures, so keep checking in!  I also hope to post some of the baby projects I've started working on.

Even with the not feeling great part I absolutely love being pregnant.  I love watching my belly grow and hearing our baby's heartbeat at doctors appointments.  I love preparing for baby J's arrival by working on a crib set and crocheting little booties and hats.  But most of all I love thinking about and praying for our baby as he or she grows and develops a little more each week.  It's overwhelming in the best possible way when I think about how God has entrusted this precious child to us, and I pray that by his grace our little family may serve as mirror of Christ's love for us.

1 Samuel 1 27-28
27 I prayed for this child, and the LORD has granted me what I asked of him. 28 So now I give him to the LORD. For his whole life he will be given over to the LORD.” And he worshiped the LORD there.
